Welcome to our recruitment microsite and thank you for your interest in the immensely challenging and fascinating role we have on offer - the post of Chief Executive of the new unitary council for County Durham.

Our council will be one of the first new unitary authorities to be established in over a decade and one of the first new flagship unitary County authorities introduced by the Government.

This site sets out where we are with developing the new council and the challenges that lie ahead. It provides information on the role and the kind of person we need to recruit to successfully lead our organisation over the coming years.

County Durham is unique. It has a long and rich history and outstanding natural beauty. But it also has some major economic, social and environmental challenges to address which are holding our area and communities back.

Transforming the way that local government works with other sectors will help us to tackle these issues and deliver better public services in the County.

This unique role requires someone who can lead our new £1billion organisation through a period of significant cultural and organisational change, someone who has an appetite and passion for public service and who is committed to delivering better outcomes for our customer base of half a million people and 10,000 businesses.

We want to recruit an individual with proven leadership skills, with vision and purpose, who is open and challenging, and who will enjoy the opportunity of working with us in taking the County forward.
