Chief Executive - About the Role
The Chief Executive will be the head of paid service, and will have overall management and operational responsibility for staff providing the full range of unitary local government services in the County.
As the head of a new council, you will provide clear managerial leadership for the authority, developing its culture and promoting change and innovation.
Supporting the Leader and Cabinet, you will ensure that the council’s corporate strategies and policies are clearly defined and implemented and will be responsible for developing the council’s organisational capacity and structure, so that it is able to provide first class services to local residents and businesses.
The Chief Executive will be a leading figure within local government and the County and regional scene, and will play a significant role in:
- Promoting multi-agency partnership working
- Improving the economic performance of the County
- Ensuring County Durham has a strong voice within the region and makes a major contribution to regional affairs

This is a challenging role, ideally suited to an ambitious individual looking to contribute to a new organisation in its formative phase of development and growth. To meet these challenges it’s likely you’ll have a track record of change management and come from a customer service or service orientated environment and have a corporate approach to working. Knowledge and/or experience of working in the public sector and an understanding of local government politics will be desirable. We are looking for someone who has energy, vision, leadership and a results-focused approach. You will also be adaptable and capable of taking on different challenges, namely around organisational development and performance and lead a new organisation into the next decade.
